"Can you tell me where the old tunnels are? I would like to inspect them myself."

"They're at the bottom of the city. But only an Earth Eater could re-excavate those old tunnels, and one of rare skill and ability..."

Earth Eater is a name for the Mole people, and the Mole town is Gramor. As you fly to Gramor, you see Spring in the distance. The waterfall above Spring leads up to a large muddy lake.

The lake is full of mud in some spots, brilliantly clear in others where the flow is better. It somehow remains beautiful and not stagnant: wildlife perusing places, large stork-like birds snaking through the mud to eat fish, water snakes slipping in and out of the mud, etc. The mud obviously coagulates quite thickly.

send out a little probe type thing into the mud to see how deep it goes and whether or not theres something in there.

The probe is quickly lost amidst apparently infinite and constantly shifting muck, transmitting nothing.

Brunnengus gets stuck catastrophically quickly. Worse, the texture is like quicksand, transmuting his strength into failure.

That's not going to happen, Brunnengus is not taking active damage. It's just impossible for him to proceed.

Gramor, like many towns, has changed. Instead of a small hole in the ground, there are a number of elegant ramps leading down into the earth. Underground, there are tenements connected on the outside by ladders leading to balconies as well as more standard entrances. Now what to do?

You ask to see Mogu. He comes out, smiling and calm. When you tell him you need to get into the Tower of Zot, he says, "No, you don't."

"Hmm. I don't think any of us know anything. The Dark Dragon Tribe are pretty rare nowadays, the people you found in Infinity were among the few left. Hey! I have it! You need a digger, right? One of the best students I ever had, Renan, has been missing for awhile. There's a reward out for his recovery." He looks around for a picture, then finds one. "His digging style is unique: he meanders somewhat, so the tunnels are never straight, but they're the most efficient for the digging process and are always safe."

ask for something renan might have worn or had close to him/her so the shark and werewolf and werebear can get a good scent and get to tracking.

"There is something...." He thinks for a moment. "Ah! Go talk to Kagau, she was his girlfriend. But no one's seen him in Gramor, so he must be a good distance away."

Mogu gives Brunnengus one better: Kagau's "address". Addresses are odd in the Mole style of architecture, but Brunnengus manages to figure it out quickly enough and find Kagau's apartment.
