"Well, unfortunately, that's not true. But we have people who check to make sure we're not. And a Ranger is a great occupation!"
The car is now around other cars. They drive past the houses and begin to enter the city. The city seems to become of worse quality to one side. Relan and Dajess look at it more meaningfully.

Relan says, "...The city we live in, and a lot of other cities, have, well... See, some people don't like the look of people, or they think that all people who look or feel different from them must be bad. So they don't want to pay them as much and give them as nice places to live. That's one of the reasons why your.... first mother was killed."

Jess now sees through the window a spiffier part of town. It is more upbeat, big and crowded, almost all city. The marquis of the movie theatre (again, Jess is surprised at how much she knows and recognizes) is pink-bordered, with large block letters, and with somewhat classy neon-lights. In contrast, there are shops called things like (in the alien language Jess is quickly learning) Condom Sense. She feels that it is a vibe of something that she knows... a phrase that sounds like "Nyuw Yark".
