As part of my series on broadening the team's knowledge of their Group Resources: By defeating the Transgressive Beast of Parched Alchemy, the team acquired communal potions.
Every starting PC acquires three F2 potions of their design. These potions can be of many types. For example: Hack, with his Mysosilin fungus taken from trading with Krane, managed to turn his three starting potions into undeath potions that granted him three distinct ways of becoming more like Death, which is part of his training to become a new Horseman/Grim Reaper. Absorbing Man got his power to absorb the qualities and properties of things and entities he touched from Loki creating a potion. Potions can be throwing potions like in Diablo II, or healing potions with tons of charges, etc.
The communal potions, meanwhile, are partially described. They come from two sources: Taoist legendary alchemy and D&D. The D&D potions are well-described. The spells per day, per usual in CotG, are at Forbidden level and basically become when I determine a day of time has passed for the PC. They also add to the spells per day of anyone who casts their spells in that way.
Meanwhile, the Taoist potions I add more commentary for here. (Their original source is the Mystic China sourcebook. Anyone who can see me in person could read it and check out the manifold awesomeness in it.)
The Chih Shu Po Tzu was a potion that was rumored to revive individuals fully. The quantity of this coursing through the teams' veins partially explains the groups' astounding ability to fight below zero HP, reraise opportunities, and the ease of revival. Its second sight functions to make the person's eyes the equivalent of a Blind Master or of the third eyes. It also allows spell sight, spell dodging, etc. (all that stuff the team does, sometimes with no explanation).
The Huang Shui Yueh Hua (Greater Yin Elixir) is just that: An Elixir of pure Yin. (Yin is negative ki, and in Chinese myth is the force that keeps things like Kuei-Jin, Oriental vampires, alive. Usually). Those who drink it may, depending on their bodies' reactions [read: character's choice], go one of two directions. First: They may choose to become an Undead Immortal. This makes them, guess what, Immortal. Due to the nature of Undead in CotG, most of the risks are bypassed, but it does have some slight bad karma stuff. Advantages, though, includes commanding undead (even enemy undead) with very high saving throws for them to resist, turning into pure negative chi, enhanced negative chi mastery, natural necromantic power, negative chi sensitivity and appearing dead. Second: they may choose to just get a huge boost to Negative Ki (which gives +25 Ki for the purpose of negative ki) and Negative Ki control, which allows people to get close to the pinnacle of dual Chi Mastery: Simultaneous Negative and Positive Ki charging!
The Pi Cheng Fei Hua grants supernatural control over one's own Chi. This is part of what allows virtually anyone on the team to emulate a DBZ warrior and master martial artist simultaneously even with low Chi, Tech and CPs into relevant classes. The PCFH massively increases one's efficiency, compensating for lower net Ki as well as not having training to raise efficiency. It also is part of the speed boost that lets pretty much everyone in the team, with the possible exception of Kriltil, Handyman and Sarashito when in her White Knight form, move at superliminal speed, even with VH Godlike Reflex (which only asymptotically approaches superliminal speed, never reaches it).
The Chin I is said to purify the soul and body, providing a partial form of enlightenment. This, to be noted, would be Taoist enlightenment, which has to do with understanding the universe in its intricacies, as opposed to Buddhist enlightenment which is about escaping samsara. (Notably: Very few have accomplished both.) It also helps reduce the effect of anyone's Negative Traits that have to do with bodily infirmity. (Looking at you, Xexilia...)
While we're on the topic: Other Taoist potions that are fun include Chiu Chuan, which cures demonic possession; the Chiung Ching, which cures diseases of spirit, flesh and intellect, and is thus a good cure for people on the team addicted to drugs, etc.; Lang Kan Hua Tua, something that turns people into pure ki; Shui Yang Ching Ying, which releases P.P.E. and Positive Chi from the body of the wielder, providing a massive but uncontrollable temporary power flash; and, most importantly, the Chiu Huan, which is rumored to be a fast track to purification!
