This is going to be a slowly expanding explanation of the game world, including pertinent bits of history, location, etc. If anyone has any questions or things they'd like to see more of, post here! I'm also considering posting a short story of an average guy's life. Also see cotgrpg.proboards78.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=cotgrules&thread=1139645145&page=1 and cotgrpg.proboards78.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=cotggroupresources&thread=1134082015&page=1 , among other places.
After the defeat of the All-Monster, the Old Guard became a force to be reckoned with in a variety of fields. Scientific advancement expanded incomprehensibly. Fred Lumina-Weise and Miguel Roedor in particular became known as activists for revolutionary change, and with the space opened by the defeat of the Xenosians and the public disgracing of the US government (as well as the fact that no government could militarily oppose the Old Guard and few wanted to), geopolitical reality changed.
On January 1, 2014, it became official: The United Earth Government was born. Its design was a compromise and collaboration at many different levels. The global representative body features representatives from all over the world in a system similar to America's bicameral legislature, with each region receiving two delegates automatically and then an additional number of delegates based on their population. Though the distinction between the Senators and Representatives (or Lords and Commons, or...) is much less formalized than in the American system, but nonetheless smaller or less populous regions get major influence, and if decisions disproportionately affect a region or are uniquely contentious implementation is often held back pending a referendum. However, this system has strict injunctions and various restrictions that prevent parties from forming, though loose coalitions do form and issues are constantly changing. Currently, a more conservative or reactionary coalition that has been called the Oak Switch Coalition has gained some momentum following the disgrace of the radical UEG President, a fact that Fred and Badcat have decried in public (since Crashing Heavens would be indirectly responsible for such a conservative backlash). There is also an executive branch and a judicial branch, and a difficult to define but very effective fourth branch called The People's Branch, which is directly democratic and used as a check and a watchdog agency.
At regional levels, everything from tribal-based systems to anarchist polities operate. In fact, the district encompassing the former Mexican territories taken during the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (the Mexican Cession, including California, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, etc.) as well as some of Mexico is a participatory economy and polity!
Similar developments are expected in some of the Associated Worlds, the worlds dimensionally linked to Earth (as they have been since the days of the Fate's Guardians [Final Battle timeline]). These worlds include Hael [the world Thrash, Badcat and Xeno hail from], Lennus [Paladin's Quest], the worlds associated with Final Fantasy, Weyard [Golden Sun], Ticondera [7th Saga] and other worlds.
Space travel is incomprehensibly easy and quick. Though some areas are difficult to get to or quarantined, most of the time one can expect to be across three galaxies or in another dimension by lunchtime then home in time to catch the game! Even when such travel is not operated by the government or relevant worker's councils and thus free, the charges are infinitesimal.
The Old Guard have been very sensitive to accusations of tyranny, tampering with decisions, etc. Few Old Guard members have run for any kind of political position, Carpet Bomber being a notable (and quite conservative) exception. They associate themselves mostly with the Rangers and activist or watchdog groups. There are a set of both formal and voluntary rules called collectively the Old Guard Mandates that prevent the omnipotent powers of the Old Guard from being used to invade privacy, undermine civil liberties, etc.
