OOG: EBON Stone People. Ebon's a color there, not a noun or wood.
"Good. Of course, you're only doing that because I told you to do it."

"Yes," Mace says over his shoulder, continuing the work. He decides not to argue with her anymore, simply feeling that it isn't worth the effort.

She leans over to him and says, "How many times must I tell you to grow up? This isn't a school and it isn't a babysitting service. I give you tools, and like very literal tools, you have to know what you're going to do with them. One of these days you'll have to find a REASON for why you do things. Something aside from the accumulation of more power."

Mace continues to scrap at one particular wall, chopping up a root he had accidentally added to the mix. "I do have a reason. I'm helping the CH, saving the universe," when he says it though, he doesn't sound very convinced himself, the tone of his voice sounding weak and almost hollow of pride now.
Mace stops and looks at the ground, trying as he usually does, to find a logical, realistic answer. But after a minute of thinking about it, he looks up at her, his green eyes now lonely and empty. "You're right. I don't have any other reason." He turns back to the stubborn root and starts hacking at it viciously, gritting his teeth.
Maybe this little hut of dirt would be his new home.

She looks at him. "I can understand. You've been taken from powerful figure to powerful figure. Your father. Your adoptive father. Every one of your uncles, mothers, all talented, all powerful, all nigh-omnipotent. Even your brothers and sisters with inborn power. And you feel that you don't have it. But what you don't have isn't talent. It's a reason to do things. A passion. You won't reach them in any way that matters until you do."

He finally cuts the root out of the dirt and breathes, calming down a bit. "Yes, yes that is true. Everyone but me it seems has someone or something they're doing everything for. I have no one that really means something to me besides Fred and my adoptive family and they can defend themselves just fine. I'm not fighting to save Gaia, I'm not seeking revenge over my lost planet, nor am I trying to reach Enlightenment. I'm just a guy who knows a few little tricks with magic and is too power-hungry for his own good at times."
Mace looks up at her, seeming a bit drained at the thought of talking about this with her, yet, a little relieved. "I don't know what there is to fight for. I'm not seeking attention here, I'm just honest with myself and know when things are true and not." He puts the rock aside for a moment and goes outside of the tunnel to go look for his waterskin, wherever that may be. "What is there for me to fight for? I don't care too much about the universe, I like exploring it. That's actually why I joined the CH, was to explore the universe and learn everything I could about it."

She turns around and shrugs. "I can't answer that question for you. The universe has too many people fighting for something-they-know-not."

Mace looks at her. "Why are you training me? What are you getting out of training me?" Mace was now curious. He had come into this thinking that she was just training him for the sake of training him. But now he sensed there was a reason or she wouldn't have bothered with this, he believes. He grabs the waterskin, takes a long sip, then takes it back with him to the dirt mound, sets it outside the entrance, and goes back inside. He still listens for her answer, but starts digging himself a living room.

"It's time for me to join the world, join Infinity itself. It's my duty to pass along my knowledge so it's not lost." Relzka seems to be leaving out quite a bit, but what isn't there is also extraneous: That is the truth behind truths.

(Forgot to mention, Infinity is just one of those planes that just is there. Infinity is in reference to how numbers can go on forever. The NeverNever is where souls go, it's a version of Heaven. Everyone goes there, but cantomancers have a deeper connection with it than most.)
"You wish to join your family beyond the NeverNever," he says, almost feeling a bit guilty. He wasn't making her last bits of time on this plane memorable ones, and he could do more to make it worthwhile.
"Relzka, I think I have an idea that would better allow me to better learn how to be like the mole. Leave me in the tunnels underneath the mountains in the area and give me eight days to make it to the surface. Block my use of magic and my paranormal abilities; allow me to only use my body and the tools available to me. I believe this would help me become like the mole."

OOG: Yeah, I got that. Hence her saying that.
"No, simply be one with reality as is. I know how to train you."

Mace shrugs and continues on with his digging. "Did you know those with the Gift, like Richard, are proficient with using sculpting tools? The Gift seems to come out in new ways with their wizards and sorceresses. Sometimes it compliments their paintings, their smithing, and their cooking." Mace finally finishes his tunnel system, with four entrances, three rooms, and a small pit in the center with a chimney overhead for a fire.

Mace is obviously dextrous enough to perform that feat [skills rule, don't they?] Relzka nods. "Ready?"

Mace comes out of his hole and ruffles his hair, getting a few clumps of dirt out. "Yeah."

Relzka throws out her hands. "All right", she whispers. Shards of crystal form in the air spontaneously, like watching a sudden frost. The structures fractally broaden outwards, occasional Swiss-cheese style holes throughout, holes completely devoid of cantomantic energy. Mace sees that soon he will be trapped from all sides. "Take a breath, boy", she says, now harsh again. "It's time to commit to cantomancy. If you can't shift your form through the crystal over and over, you will die."

Mace looks up and asks, "You mean, go through the crystal? become crystal? Don't go through the holes?"

"Oh," is all he says as he waits for the crystal to come down around him. He stands under a section of crystal, avoiding the holes. Either the crystal is something he has to learn how to magically rework, or he had to find a state of mind in which to be in as he touches the crystal. Since the holes are void of cantomantic energy, that may allude to the idea that magic is possible with the crystal itself.
Problem is, what view of the world goes with crystal? He decides to try magic first, focusing on himself. He looks at the crystal and tries to match his body's frequency to match the crystal, so that he might match it on a wave length, following the idea that Einstein proposed that everything is energy, meaning everything is light on the most basic level. He's pretty sure though that he isn't correct with his current approach.
Crystal is often translucent, see-through. Meaning...honesty? Being honest with one's self? Being open to everything?

The problem is that if you stand in a hole a) you yourself may die from the lack of energy and b) you can't use any cantomancy to get out unless you have a cantomantic charge. Also, you're not IN one of the holes. You're being surrounded by crystal.
