Anchress is an Omega Mutant on par with Iceman and Jean Grey, but like Iceman she is not entirely interested in developing her powers to their height, viewing them as somewhat unnatural and also wanting to focus on her love for science.
Her power is a bizarre one. She has theorized that the fundamental ability comes from carbon and iron's lack of innate energy and fundamental stability. She is able to introduce stability into electromagnetic and radiatioactive forms.
Real Name: Salina Naiwalu
Ethnicity: African-Sikh
Religion: Hindu (her father is Sikh, so her Hinduism includes some Muslim and Sikh components)
Studies: Science, particularly electromagnetism
Hobbies: Dancing (combines African and Indian folk)
Outfits: Tends to wear long flowing skirts and T-shirts, likes to look good but doesn't have the focus to do it so she relies on her more fashion-conscious X-children.
Her X outfit
Eye Color: Rainbow
Hair: White
Skin Color: Slightly reddish black
Disposition: Salina is an eager overachieving student. She focuses so much on her science that her mutant abilities are somewhat underdeveloped despite prodigious potential, part of which stems from her father's ambivalance over the topic.
When relaxed, Salina has a very girly and non-sexual behavior, indeed almost androgynous. This belies her gorgeous figure.
Family History: Both of her parents are prominent scientists.
Her mother, Oh!tay Naiwalu, was involved in the South African genetic warfare program despite her race, but quickly decided to leave the program and was instrumental in ending apartheid.
Her father, Najin Raashad, also successfully hid his ethnicity and religion from the Indian state (who persecute the Sikhs) while he worked with the Indian nuclear program. Unlike Oh!tay, he left the program not wholly out of ethical concerns but also out of fear that he would be discovered as he became more and more devout in his religious practice.
The two met in America during their appeals for asylum. Despite different religion, national background, and other concerns, close quarters created chemistry, and they quickly married, Oh!tay already a month pregnant with Salina.
Conflicts quickly emerged, however. Oh!tay wanted the couple to stay in public industry or in selected corporations, while Najin was decidedly more amoral, viewing science as good no matter what. The two's fights also manifested in how to relate to their children: Najin was afraid of the genetic aberrations on a variety of levels, including fearing malevolent developments, while Oh!tay was one of the few scientists who was firmly in support of mutant's rights movements and indeed was a little on the idealistic side about mutation. Oh!tay wanted Salina to go to the X-Academy, but Najin blocked it, and Professor X didn't want to pry.
Her parents divorced when she was fourteen, which lead Oh!tay to finally win out and send her daughter to the X-Academy. She uses . In anger, her father dropped off the map and is rumored to be assisting Pakistani or another rogue state's nuclear ambitions (though that may be an elaborate cover story for going deep underground with the US, and given his statement about his own daughters' and sons' mutation, he may be attempting to create a radioactive final solution or cure).
The story of her life includes race and racism, mutation, the savagery of modern biological and nuclear warfare, gender dynamics, science, the relation to the state and to the military, and in short a microcosm of the politics behind the mutant dispute.
She has a non-mutant sister and a mutant brother.
