Tri-Beam: A technology of the Arkhon, this uses an ionizing laser to make a tracing pattern that energy follows. Initially, it combines plasma, ion and laser damage, but better versions of the Tri-Beam (more formally called a "Ion Path Weapon", either burst, automatic, stream or single shot) use particle beams. The Tri-Beam is difficult to make variable and some armors, especially Arkhon armors, are resistant to it. They also are less effective against forcefields. But physical items break down upon the effect, the ionization weakens it, and each burst is powerful. Further, multiple Tri-Beams become very powerful, so some mercenary companies have a Tri-Beam Unit.
Variable Energy: Originally (or most famously, really) developed by the Vallax, Variable Energy uses an energy reader and computer system to alter each burst fired until an optimal energy form (in all senses: intensity, position on the EM spectrum, etc.) is reached. The Variable Energy weapon can damage even the normally invulnerable, pierce armors, smash through barriers... It is famously effective against the Borg, one reason Borg have given up assimilating Vallax.
